The Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission (GCPRC) received a $500,000 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant from the Environmental Protection Agency in 2017 to reduce storm water runoff and pollution in the Swartz Creek on the parcel of land that lies at the confluence of the Swartz Creek and the Flint River.

Plans are underway to complete the work, and YOUR input is needed. The Watershed Coalition is working with Parks to solicit this input. The comment period is open until June 15th, and you can add your input via this online survey. If you have additional thoughts on the project that don’t fit in the survey, you may submit those to info@flintriver.org. Please put “Island Street Project input” in the subject. Questions about the project should be directed to the GCPRC.

Project Details

The GCPRC will construct green infrastructure to filter and reduce the flow of stormwater, preventing more than 2.35 million gallons/year of untreated stormwater (and associated sediments, nutrients, and pathogens) from ultimately discharging into Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron.

While the primary goal is to reduce stormwater run off into the Swartz Creek, in doing so the project also will help reshape this parcel from an overgrown eyesore into a park-like setting with new river access on the Swartz Creek. The site will also serve as a demonstration site for green infrastructure upon completion of construction. This project is part of the larger Flint Riverfront Restoration Project.

Planned improvements include:

Rain gardens

Bioswales

Buffer strips

Permeable pavement

Swartz Creek Access

Your input is needed and appreciated.

Please take some time to review the plans, then complete this online survey to register your input.
