Corridor Alliance

2007-2022

UPDATE: The Corridor Alliance Chapter of the Flint River Watershed Coalition disbanded in November 2022, with six of the chapter's board members joining the FRWC's board of directors. The intent is to focus on strengthening the FRWC as an organization. The Corridor Alliance's projects and focus on Flint will not go away - they are just becoming core projects of the FRWC.

The Corridor Alliance Chapter of the Flint River Watershed Coalition partnered with the City of Flint’s diverse communities to build healthy connections to the Flint River system through our focus areas of :

  • Access – Pursuing infrastructure improvements and removing barriers to facilitate outdoor activity
  • Engagement – Welcoming people to the river through education, outreach, and fun
  • Life – Protecting the diversity of life in our river system to nourish our communities

The majority of the work of the Flint River Corridor Alliance (FRCA) occured in partnership with other organizations and the residents of Flint, and varies year to year based on the needs and opportunities in the community. Some of FRCA's projects included:

The Flint River Flotilla is our annual floating party on the river, which happens the first Saturday in August. Folks gather with a boat or flotation device of their choosing for a leisurely 2.25 mile journey from Grand Traverse Street to the Paddlers Landing at Mott Park Recreation Area in Flint. Since 2014, more than 1,300 people have experienced the Flint River through the all-ages, all-abilities Flotilla. The Flotilla continues as a project of the FRWC.

Kayak Flint was co-managed by the Corridor Alliance and FRWC. The kayak rental and livery service, launched in fall 2018, operated behind Tenacity Brewing in Flint. Kayak Flint, which continues as a program of FRWC, offers kayak rentals and shuttling service from May-October, and FRWC staff also offers guided kayak tours, iKayak classes for those with mobility issues or disabilities, private trips, and more.

Love Your Lakes was been coordinated by the Corridor Alliance from 2018-2022. Working at two of the lakes within the city of Flint, Flint Park Lake (aka Devil’s Lake), and Thread Lake, the program strived to support residents’ visions for their lakes. Projects included resident engagement, neighborhood lake celebrations, supporting local neighborhood associations and resident-led projects, and participating in water quality and habitat monitoring.
